Harvey vs. Claude vs. ChatGPT

Harvey alternatives for small firms

Harvey is what BigLaw buys when no one's built the right tool for a 3-person firm — $1,200+/seat/month with enterprise-only sales quotes. For a solo or small firm, Claude or ChatGPT at $20/month is the realistic substitute, not a scaled-down Harvey.

Pricing

ToolPriceNotes
Harvey$1,200–2,400/user/mo (quoted)No public price list. Attorneys report initial quotes of $1,200/user/mo, $2,400/user/mo with Lexis integration, and a lower ~$399/user/mo tier offered later in negotiation.
Claude Pro$20/moIndividual subscription; Max tier runs $100-200/mo for heavier use.
ChatGPT Plus$20/moIndividual subscription, comparable positioning to Claude Pro.
SpellbookNot publishedContract-drafting specific (Word add-in), not a general research tool — priced via sales call.

What practitioners report

We use Harvey — and our leadership is loud about it... We train people to use Harvey, sell ourselves as a Harvey shop — how do we get away from them if they raise their prices five-fold?
Now with Anthropic selling to law firms, Harvey / Legora has no MOAT. They can hire as many lawyers as they want... Any law firm worth its salt would just deal with Anthropic directly... No thousands of dollars per user charges.

Switching signals

Harvey initially quoted us $1,200 per user per month, and $2,400 per user per month if we wanted Lexis integration. Later, they came back with a lower tier around $399/user/month.
