For firms billing clients, often insurers, who require task- and activity-coded time entries.
UTBMS (Uniform Task-Based Management System) codes classify each billed time entry by task, for example L110 for fact investigation, and activity, for example A103 for drafting, so a client can compare spend across matters and firms on a common scale.
Without the right code on each entry, an otherwise accurate invoice still gets kicked back. It's easy to bill correctly in plain English and still fail a coded submission because the codes were never applied.
Your time entry reads '2.5 hrs — reviewed medical records, drafted demand letter.' For a coded invoice, that has to split into two entries: one tagged with the investigation code, one with the drafting code.
